Avoid Wallowing in Self-Pity
Today's Devotion, Avoid Wallowing in Self-Pity. If we all threw our problems into a pile and saw other people's problems, we would take ours back. When someone throws a pity party, it means that they are indulging in self-pity, focusing heavily on their own misfortunes and acting like a victim. Self-pity is not of God.
It makes you look only at your own pain and feelings. It pulls your attention away from God and to other people. It traps you in bitterness and makes you feel completely alone, which goes against God's promise to always be with you.
The enemy comes for your emotions first, because once he controls your feelings, he can control your focus. God never told us that we would not have challenges. Wallowing in self-pity is similar to wallowing in sin.
Both makes you give up instead of trying to heal or change. Both habits turn your attention completely inward. Both of them gives you false comfort and letting go of them feels hard.
My brothers and sisters in Christ, not everyone who you take your problems to can help you. There are some problems that only God can fix. He is a miracle working God and he specializes in doing the impossible.
Stop complaining to people and start believing in God, because you will encounter people who will remind you of your problems in a disrespectful way. But God will deliver you from your problems and you will have testimonies that you can share with others. In 1 Thessalonians 5 verse 18 it is written, Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
God can fix all our problems once we stop complaining and start praying and commit our lives to him. If you cannot control your ego, you will have a problem with God. In Jonah 4 verse 3 to 4 it is written, Jonah became angry and felt so self-righteous in his misery that he told God he wanted to die because things did not go his way.
Heavenly Father, we pray for those who are going through self-pity. Help us when we feel down and out, when depression takes full control over our emotion and when things aren't going the way that we had planned. Help us not to look to people for what we can only get from you.
Forgive us for dwelling on our disappointments and comparing our journey with others and allowing discouragement to take control of our minds. Strengthen us with your Holy Spirit and remove every negative thought and replace it with a mind full of gratitude and patience to wait on your perfect timing.
All these we ask in Jesus name, Amen.
