Lord, help us to keep our word

Today's Devotion, Lord, help us to keep our word. One of my favorite gospel songs is I Have Decided to Follow Jesus. It is a song that shows our commitment not only to follow him, but to practice what we preach so that we can live a life that can influence others to emulate.

Practicing what we preach is easier said than done, and sometimes our commitment can lead to resentment when things don't go according to plan. Simply put, it is easier to sing the song than to live by the words that we sing. I recently saw an article of an international boxer whose wife filed for divorce after he lost three fights in a row.

According to him, when he was winning his fights, everything was okay because with each victory came a substantial amount of money. The lifestyle that she was used to slowly began to change, and the commitment that she made when she was wearing the ring, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, was no longer valid because her focus was on for better, for richer, and in health. The real test to follow Jesus is when we are going through the tribulations that he went through and then asking for forgiveness of those who put him to death.

There is a consequence for every action. When Jesus fed the multitude, some were there for the barley loaf and fish. They weren't there to hear the word.

And not everyone who gets married fall in love with the person. They fall in love with the money, not poverty. In Proverbs 21 verse 13 it is written, whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.

And in Numbers 30 verse 2 it is written, if a man vows a vow to the Lord or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. Heavenly Father, help us to commit ourselves not only by saying but by doing also.

In Psalm 89 verse 34 it is written, I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. And in Matthew 5 verse 37 it is written, let what you say be simply yes or no. Anything more than this comes from evil.

Lord, if we want to be devoted to you, help us to be committed in our actions and our words so that we do not mislead others.

All these we ask in Jesus name, Amen.
