Be careful of the words you speak
Today's Devotion, Be careful of the words you speak. Not because they are sayings that are repeated from generation to generation. That doesn't mean that they should be repeated by us.
The phrase take my foolish advice is one of them. The Bible has several biblical verses that speak about the power of the tongue. In Proverbs 18 verse 21 it is written, Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
This Bible verse is saying that our spoken words carry immense weight. They can encourage, heal, and build people up, or they can crush spirits and ruin reputations. The phrase take my foolish advice is not a blessing, and God is not going to change his words to accept our phrase.
Even though it may seem humorous, it has serious consequences. Taking foolish advice can cause poor choices in making investments, making choices that you may have to live with for the rest of your life. Following bad ideas can never give you good results.
It can cause danger, and taking foolish advice can make you lose your hard-earned money. God tells us that his word has power, and when loose words are put in a song and we keep singing it, it doesn't change the meaning. Even when we are enjoying what we are singing, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me, is another one of these phrases.
Not because we love it, that doesn't mean God is going to accept it. In Psalm 141 verse 3 it is written, Set a guard over my mouth, Lord, keep watch over the door of my lips. The phrase lose lips sink ships warns us to avoid speaking irresponsible comments.
Careless unguarded talk can reveal secrets and lead to disaster. My brothers and sisters in Christ, be careful of who you tell your secrets to, because a loose lip is like a running pipe. In Proverbs 10 verse 14 it is written, The wise lay up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.
Heavenly Father, put a seal on our lips, especially those who are trying to fit into the wrong crowd. In Proverbs 10 verse 23 it is written, Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding. Lord help us to ensure that we allow you to be a part of every decision that we make, especially the things that we speak.
Remove gossip, harshness and anger from our mind so good words can come out. Give us wisdom so that we do not repeat every slang that we hear if it is not uplifting. Help us to know what to buy for our children that has words on it so that we do not unknowingly put curses on them, but instead words of upliftment.
