Beware of the sin of omission
Today's Devotion, Beware of the sin of omission. A sin of omission happens when you know the right thing to do but you choose not to do it. Here are some examples of sins of omission.
Staying quiet instead of speaking up to defend an innocent person or stop an injustice. Failing to pray, read scripture, or attend religious services when you know you should. Seeing someone who is hungry, poor, or hurting and refusing to share food, money, or comfort when you have the power to help.
Holding on to anger and refusing to forgive someone who has asked for it. In James 4 verse 17 it is written, If anyone then knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is a sin for them. My brothers and sisters in Christ, private sins have public consequences because what we condone privately will never be right publicly.
Tell a lie once and all your truths become questionable. Withholding the truth is as harmful as telling a lie. In Luke 12 verse 47 it is written, And that slave who knew his master's will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will will receive many lashes.
No matter how much you dress up a lie, the naked truth will always be accepted by God. Lack of knowledge has caused people to sin even by their actions. Not wanting to get in trouble so you kept silent is a sin.
What you hide can hurt you more than what you reveal. In Proverbs 3 verse 27 to 28 it is written, Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is due, when it is your power to act. In 1 John 3 verse 17 it is written, If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or a sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Heavenly Father, we pray for those who have developed the habit of hiding the truth.
Lord, you know our heart, our weakness, and the moments we have turned away from the good you have called us to do. Forgive us for our silence when we should have spoken, our inaction when we should have served, and the times we let laziness, fear, and selfishness keep us from being your hands and feet. Lord, cleanse us from the sins of what we have left undone. Align our heart with your will. Shape our priorities and use us today as fruitful vessel of your goodness.
All these we ask in Jesus name, Amen.
