Today's Devotion, Lord, help us to control our temper. Our temper is what gets most of us into trouble, and it's our pride that keeps us there. Many times because of our pride, we do not apologize because of the problem our temper may get us in.
When you are not able to control your temper when you are right, the person who is wrong may not end up facing the consequences. A judge will not condone your anger when you avoid judicial justice to enforce jungle justice. You may not be able to control every situation and its outcome, but always remember, temper that cannot be controlled can open the door to regret.
Years ago I remember being at the workshop and a man came on the premises. He said that he was avoiding an altercation with an irate woman. As he was about to explain what transpired, I saw a car driving down the driveway and a well-dressed woman came out of it.
Profanity and threats were the only things that came from her mouth. I then realized that the man was a licensed firearm holder, and she started to abuse him in every way possible. The only thing that I could do is to call upon God and I said, God, speak through me.
The woman's anger was so intense that her hand was on his neck. I pulled her away from him and I forced her in her car and I said, Do you believe that the bed at Fort Augustus is as comfortable as the bed that you came out of this morning? Immediately she started crying and I began to console her. The man was able to leave and she left a couple minutes after.
He came back and asked me, What did I say to her? Because several persons who attempted to speak to her couldn't even touch her. I told him, I didn't speak to her. God spoke through me.
In James 1 verse 19 to 20, it is written, My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Heavenly Father, in Proverbs 29 verse 11, it is written, Fool gives full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end. Lord, many times we do things that we will regret, especially when we are angry.
I ask for your help in handling our anger in a way that honors you. Give us wisdom and strength to control our emotions and give us the words that can extinguish the flame of anger. Lord, we pray for those who have given in to their anger and they are now dealing with regret.
Help them to change their lives so that they can change the lives of others.
All these we ask in Jesus' name, Amen.
