Lord, help us to practice the pause
Today's Devotion, Lord, help us to practice the pause. Silence has fixed many problems and it has saved many relationships. Because in the heat of anger, silence is the best fire extinguisher.
Once we guard our tongue, we can save a lot. But once we let it loose, we can lose more than we can imagine. God has given us wisdom to know what to say and when to say it.
And the best way to deal with an irritated tongue is to practice the pause. Try as we might. There'll be times when our situation is way too much to handle.
But always bear in mind that we are imperfect people who serve a perfect God. Whenever someone does something to irritate us, practice the pause before we open our mouth. Whenever your relationship seems to be falling apart, practice the pause before you open your mouth.
When you are doubtful about something that you have invested heavily in, practice the pause before you open your mouth. Pause before assuming, judging, accusing. And when you pause, pray.
If you pause to say no, never say maybe. Because expectation is the root of all heartache. My brothers and sisters in Christ, in Proverbs 10 verse 19 it is written, Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongue.
Heavenly Father, allow me to be wise and hold my tongue when necessary. Do not let my words be guided by my anger in heated situations. Lord, I pray that I refrain from uttering words that will separate and destroy friendships that can do irreparable damage because of the oaths that are spoken in the heat of anger.
Help us, Lord, to practice the pause in every situation whenever anger comes to visit us. Help us to shut our mouth and deafen our ears to those around us who will encourage us to say things that can cause more damage. Help us, Lord, for you have said that life and death are in the power of the tongue.
Forgive us for saying unkind things, especially when we become blind to the consequences of our actions. Lord, let us pause and pray for you to take the anger away.
All these we ask in Jesus name, Amen.
