Taming the Tongue

Today's Devotion, Taming the Tongue. Taming the tongue isn't easy, especially when your anger has reached a point where it seems to be getting out of control. One of the most difficult things to deal with is when you are always helping someone, financially and otherwise, and with everything that you have done, they have never shown you any form of gratitude and they have never told you thanks.

As difficult as it may seem, try to control your tongue because their pride may be the cause of their silence. Always remember our words, though small, can cause great damage if left unchecked. And the fact that they have never told you thanks doesn't prevent God from giving you your blessing.

Taming the tongue is easier said than done, especially when we are trying to do it ourselves and not seeking God's intervention. The right words can heal a broken heart and the wrong words can destroy friendships and open the door to malice. Taming the tongue shows a level of spiritual maturity, especially when you can think about the consequence instead of experiencing the consequences.

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Exchanging insults will come when you are unable to tame your tongue. In Jeremiah 51 verse 51 it is written, We are ashamed because we have heard reproach.

Disgrace has covered our faces, for aliens have entered the holy places of the Lord's hosts, my brothers and sisters in Christ. Taming the tongue prevents you from criticizing others. In James 4 verse 11 it is written, Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.

Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law. You are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. Heavenly Father, set a guard over my mouth and a watchman over the door of my lips.

Give me the grace to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Forgive me for the times I have used my words to dishonor you or hurt others. Lord, let no corrupt communication proceed out of our mouth but that which is good to the use of edifying.

Thank you, Lord, for sealing my lips so that I do not unknowingly block my blessing.

All these we ask in Jesus' name, Amen.
